Chevalier Family

Today, internationally three religious congregations together with an international network of laity associated with the charism, spirituality and mission of Fr Chevalier, all form part of one “Chevalier Family”.

Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC)
The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart were founded by Fr Jules Chevalier in 1854 in the French town of Issoudun.

Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (FDNSC)
In 1874, in collaboration with Mother Marie Louise Hartzer, Jules Chevalier also founded the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (FDNSC) as the sister congregation of the MSC.

Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart (MSC)
Later, in 1900, because of national tensions over international presence in some colonial areas where our missionaries worked, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart (MSC Sisters) were founded in Germany by Fr. Hubert Linckens MSC with the approval of Jules Chevalier.

Lay Members of the Chevalier family
From the very beginning, Fr Chevalier had the vision that the fullness of mission would only be realised in a global project that included laity alongside religious men and women and diocesan clergy. Today, throughout the world, there is a growing network of laity associated with the charism and mission inspired by Fr Chevalier.

Tri-Generalate
In 1982 it was decided to have regular meetings among the Superiors General and councilors of the three Religious Congregations for the purpose of closer collaboration and better communication.

At the first meeting the name “Tri-Generalate Meeting” was coined. From 1983 onwards, twice a year, a one-day meeting was held normally in one of the General Houses of our respective congregations. Since 2000, one of these meetings has been extended to three days in order to give more space for sharing, reflection and prayer. The “Tri-Generalate” has always encouraged closer collaboration among the three congregations on the provincial level and in the recent years on the continental level.

Areas of cooperation among the three congregations include initial and on-going formation, the promotion of Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation, Media and Communications, and the promotion and accompaniment of the Laity of the Chevalier Family.

Laity of the Chavelier Family
Since 1999 an international co-ordination team of Lay members of the Chevalier Family have met annually (and more recently twice a year) to animate and co-ordinate the life of the growing network of Lay members of the Chevalier Family across the world.
This committee ensures communication between the Continental Coordinators which are being established as well as between the various countries. It is also making available a basic formation program in the spirituality and charism of Fr. Jules Chevalier, in conjuction with the staff of the COR NOVUM International centre at Issoudun.

Chevalier Family in Indonesia

In Indonesia, four religious congregations share the same root of charism and spirituality which are sourced from Fr Jules Chevalier. These congregations are Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC), Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (FDNSC), Maria Mediatrix Sisters (TMM) and Fratres of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (FBHK). Together with these four congregations there are groups of lay people associated with the charism, spirituality and mission of Fr Chevalier.
